The Certified Companion Animal Rehabilitation Therapist (CCAA) II – HANDS-ON LABS: Rehabilitation Modalities, Therapeutic Exercise and Skills Check-Off course will include a review of online materials, safety and infection prevention, palpation, handling and restraint, biophysical agents: heat and cold, laser, shockwave, therapeutic ultrasound, and PEMF, therapeutic exercises, aquatic therapy, and basic outcome assessment.   The program includes a skills check-off on the final day. 

The hands-on lab course builds on the CCAA I online course material and provides participants with laboratory experiences in companion animal physical rehabilitation. These experiences include heating and cooling agents, therapeutic ultrasound, shockwave treatment, therapeutic laser, PEMF, and electrical stimulation.

The CCAA II hands-on labs will cover therapeutic exercise programs for dogs, including their benefits and associated risks.  Topics covered include exercise physiology, range of motion, stretching, gait training, strengthening exercises, balance and proprioceptive exercises, aquatic exercises, and exercises for wellness/prevention.

CCAA Module II – 3-Day Hands-on Lab Course Topics  

  • Review of osteology, arthrology, and myology
  • Palpation lab
  • Animal Handling/restraint techniques for the rehab patient
  • Use of the most common modalities in companion animal rehabilitation to include: Ultrasound, Therapeutic Laser, Electric Stimulation, Shockwave, PEMF, Thermotherapy/Cryotherapy
  • Aquatic therapy and underwater treadmill:  Cases and treatment, and general maintenance and cleaning
  • Basic techniques of massage in small animal practice including its benefits, effects and general considerations
  • Therapeutic exercise programs for proprioception and balance
  • Therapeutic exercise programs for strength and conditioning
  • Understanding and the use of home exercise programs
  • Skills Check-Off for Competency

Learning Objectives

After successful completion of this course, the participant should be able to:
