Course Overview

The NC State Certified Companion Animal Rehabilitation Assistant (CCAA) Program is a university-based program for education and training for those wanting to pursue an assistant role in a companion animal or canine rehabilitation setting.

Indeed, our team created this program with the rehab assistant in mind! We designed this program to enhance the knowledge and skills of the assistant, ultimately benefiting the rehabilitation team. The CCAA program is taught by a faculty that includes active university instructors, expert clinicians, researchers, and recognized industry experts.

Furthermore, the Certified Companion Animal Rehabilitation (CCAA) is delivered in a hybrid format of online lecture material and hands-on training to apply what you have learned from the online course material.  Specifically, the program draws from evidence-based case studies, clinical experience, and leading companies in the field of veterinary medicine.

Ultimately, this comprehensive training program equips assistants with the tools and training necessary to excel in their role within the rehabilitation team.

CCAA Program Curriculum

Consists of three modules:

Prerequisites, Eligibility, and Scope of Practice:

The CCAA program was created for individuals wanting to work in the field of small animal rehabilitation in conjunction with veterinary professionals.

The canine rehab assistant (CCAA) graduate will follow the guidelines of their individual state’s Veterinary Medical Practice Act.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn the history of animal rehabilitation and physical therapy
  • Understanding the differences and similarities between human and animal rehab
  • Understand regulatory issues and the role of the team members in animal rehabilitation
  • The rationale for veterinary physical rehabilitation
  • A review of canine anatomy and physiology
  • Understand the principles of veterinary sports medicine
  • Learn the importance of a team approach in canine rehabilitation
  • Understand the differences in acute and chronic inflammation and the proper signs of each
  • Physical agents as modalities (heat/cold, laser therapy, shockwave therapy, electric stimulation, therapeutic ultrasound, and PEMF)
  • Understand the practical use of aquatic therapy and the underwater treadmill in canine rehabilitation
  • Learn techniques of massage in small animal practice, including its benefits, effects, and general considerations
  • Understanding of therapeutic exercise programs for dogs to improve range of motion, strength/conditioning, balance, endurance, and improved function
  • Understand the principles of proprioception and useful proprioceptive exercises during canine rehabilitation
  • Animal Handling/restraint techniques for the rehab patient
  • Understanding and utilizing home exercise programs
  • Understanding of how to safely progress a dog in a rehabilitation program

Our goal is to equip professionals with a shared passion for learning, providing them with the tools and knowledge necessary to excel in the fast-growing and competitive field of canine rehabilitation.
